C.A. Farley Elementary School

Location: Hudson, Massachusetts
Enrollment: 461
Grades: PK-5
Type of School: Public

The C.A. Farley School serves 420 students in grades one through five as well as three pre-kindergarten classes totaling 41 students. Its staff uses techniques from both Responsive Classroom and Second Step to integrate the instruction of social skills and conflict resolution skills into the curriculum. All of its classrooms are deeply invested in Community Service Learning.

In 2001, the Fourth and Fifth Grade Student Council was established at C.A. Farley School. Student suggestions for school governance are discussed and investigated by the Student Council. Members benefit from the leadership experience they receive, and all fourth and fifth grade students benefit from the representation they receive through their elected Student Council members.

Farley provides a safe, caring, stable, and consistent learning environment based on the promise of putting children first. "Our goal is to promote a positive, inviting school climate," says librarian Kathy Harrity, "and to keep lines of communication open among school, home, and the community. We foster an atmosphere where students are academically challenged and encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and actions."
